3 Easy Tips to Develop and Rally Your Relationships
“It’s all about who you know.” It’s an annoying saying, right? Ideally, it all should be about your style, skills and contributions.

While I believe being positive and possessing strong self-motivation are essential to ensuring your success, building reliable relationships is equally important. And knowing how to rally these relationships is absolutely critical.

Everything from launching large integrated marketing programs to securing promotions to even meeting my husband were all based on people in my network supporting me.
The good news is developing and rallying relationships can be as simple as remembering to prioritize people. Smiling, making eye contact and treating people at all levels with respect are great ways to start. And, remembering to put down your cell phone when someone actually wants to speak face to face is also important. We live in a culture obsessed with emailing and texting, so truly connecting with someone requires your undivided attention. There is no greater use of your time.

Rallying your relationships at work can be fun too. Try these three simple ideas:
- Create an inviting workspace. At Disney, I was famous for always having a bowl of peppermint patties on my desk. You would be surprised how many people, including executives, will pop by for a patty. Food fuels friendships.
- Lead a task force. Take initiative, recruit allies and rally your relationships around a project for which you have incredible passion. This is sure to solidify relationships while demonstrating strong leadership skills.
- Plan a field trip. Where could you go that would provide inspiration for an important project? While working on “Narnia,” I took my team for fencing lessons—what a uniquely awesome bonding experience! Even going to Walmart for competitive product evaluations can prove memorable when you mix work and play.

Rallying relationships requires focus, strategy and commitment. To ensure you are consistently working on your network, here are three incredibly simple exercises to add to your weekly MUST-DO list:
- Ask someone for help. Be resourceful. Leverage the knowledge and talent of your network. People love helping each other.
- Offer someone help. Even if you are new in your career, you can offer to do research and provide your unique perspectives.
- Thank someone who helped. It doesn’t matter how long it’s been, call and make someone else’s day.
