Persist with the end of year job search
Your end of year job search needs to keep going until the end of the year, not just until the festive season begins.
As the year winds down there is a tendency amongst many to wind down their own efforts in life. People who are in career transition or active job seekers often put off or slow down looking until the new year starts.This is around a myth that an end of year job search doesn't work. It is true that many organisations have new hiring budgets and gear up in January for Q1 of the new year. But Dorothy Dalton, Talent Management Strategist says;
“That is one of those recruitment myths that people buy into when they possibly shouldn't. Very often businesses have budget to use up. So, if you are an active job seeker, don’t take your foot off the pedal at all. Maintain the momentum. If you are planning a job search, start now! For the time being it’s a candidate driven market. Hiring managers will always be interested to hear from top talent like you.”
If you want a new job in the first quarter of the new year, make sure you take action in November and December. An end of year job search can and does work. Here’s how:
Update your LinkedIn profile
You need to be searchable. Make sure your online presence is fully up to date with a compelling narrative and optimised summary.
Refresh your CV
Ensure you are presenting your best self and your resume is up to date, optimised and modern. If you haven’t looked for a job for a few years, now is the time to get up to speed on the current dos and don’ts for job search. The market is constantly changing and you need to be in the know about the latest trends.

Create a target list of ideal companies
Identify you wish list of dream companies. Research them on platforms such as Glassdoor and Payscale to get the inside scoop on how previous or current employees experience them.
Start researching contacts
Check out LinkedIn and see who would be a good contact to be connected to. In the first instance start following them. Whatever you do, don’t send a generic invitation followed up by asking for a job. That is a huge NO. Gradually start to come onto their radar.
Set up alerts
Set up alerts on job boards or on LinkedIn so that you hear about the jobs that are on the market as soon as they are published. Applying early can be a bonus in case the search is closed.
Print some private business cards
If you don’t want to give out the card for your current company, order some private cards with your USP or target job title. These can be done inexpensively online and delivered to your door. They are worth the investment.
Accept invitations to seasonal parties or events
This is the time of the year when there are parties, cocktails and other events on every day. Now you have a card to give out! Choose wisely and strategically to make sure you get maximise exposure for minimum effort. Networking is a great way to meet potential contacts. Information on 85% of jobs are circulated via network contacts, and 31% of hires are made by direct referrals.
