Pregnancy Pause on LinkedIn Profiles
Should you put a pregnancy pause on your LinkedIn Profile? Do you really need to explain your career gap to prevent missing out on opportunities at work.
In May 2017 a creative agency Mother New York launched a campaign called Pregnancy Pause, in an effort to make the difficult process of returning to work easier for mothers in the US. Somewhat surprisingly the US lags behind most developed economies with the benefits companies are legally obliged to offer female employees. The US now appears in 45th place for global gender balance ranking.
Explaining your career gaps
Pregnancy Pause suggests that some studies have shown that mothers who explain these career gaps clearly are less likely to be to be passed over for opportunities:
- Adding your new job as a “Mom” at “The Pregnancy Pause” to your LinkedIn profile under “Experience” for the duration of your maternity leave.
- Explaining your experience during maternity leave as it applies to you under “Description.” This could be anything from “Designer of human life” to “Hands-on experience in development.”
The phone number with the recorded message on the web site says:
“Hello, you have reached The Pregnancy Pause. You must be calling about a candidate’s resume that has mentioned her time spent here. While here, she spent innumerable hours raising a child, which has surely offered her invaluable experience as a prospective employee. Visit our website ThePregnancyPause.org to learn more, and remember, maternity leave is a full-time job.”
The organisation focuses on LinkedIn because it is the first port of call for recruiters.
Career coach Dorothy Dalton says she has mixed feelings about this.
Firstly I’m not a fan of the term pregnancy pause. I would prefer to use the phrase parenting pause. But it does address the issue of gaps on a LinkedIn profile, which is designed to penalise non-linear career progression. I do love the idea of “creating human life” as a career success story.
She also add that:
A listed pregnancy pause is also not going to overcome the unconscious bias of anyone reviewing the profile when it is finally read by a human eye. We need to change our business culture so that it is accepting of people, both men and women, taking parenting leave.
