Why it’s better to look for the right job – not a dream job
There is no such thing as a perfect job. Here’s why it’s better to look for the right job – not a dream job.
Social media is awash with people exhorting us to find that dream job. You can
- network your way to your dream job
- create the perfect CV
- ace an interview
- negotiate
- team up with recruiters
The list is endless. Why do we keep on doing this?
Here’s why it’s better to look for the right job – not a dream job.
But what is a dream job anyway? There is usually no such thing as a perfect job. Here’s why
1. It’s an illusion
The idea of a dream job is an illusion which is why we all end up chasing something that isn’t real. What we need to focus on is what is attainable and right for us. It may not satisfy all our needs and that is OK. Searching for a dream creates false expectations which sets us up for disappointment. This doesn’t mean to say yyou can’t set goals but better to make them incremental.
2. Not present
Focusing on a future dream can make us lose sight of what we have. When we are not “present” we stop learning and making the most of opportunities. It may not be the right job – but sometimes we have to make the most of the right now job. It means we may lose the enjoyment of the small moments that spark or bring fulfillment in what we are currently doing.
3. Lose sight of other needs
There is a basic assumption that your work or professional activity will satisfy all our needs, passions, and interests. This is not necessarily the case. There are so many other activities that will bring moments of satisfaction outside the workplace. It could be with our friends, families, hobbies, our partners, or even enjoying a beautiful sunset. We get caught up in “grindset,” not mindset.
4. May not bring happiness
And what if this dream job doesn’t bring that much sought-after elusive happiness? Then what? The next dream? What sacrifices have you made in that role? Has your mental well-being been impacted or have your important relationships suffered?
Do your inner work
This is why doing your inner work is so important. You need to know more than ever your goals, values, and vision and what is really important to you. Then and only then can you make major decisions about what job will be right for you and bring you the fulfillment you are looking for.
Look for the right job – not a dream job.
