Why women need to get on top of AI

Women need to get on top of AI, it can help solve many of the problems women face today, from healthcare to safety

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is changing our world quickly. It helps us in many areas, like healthcare, and finance, and in many elements of our daily lives with smart devices. It’s important that women don’t fall behind in using and shaping this technology  – except they are. While 54% of men now use AI in their professional or personal lives, this falls to just 35% of women, according to a survey from Flex Jobs.

Women need to play a key role in this new wave of opportunities created by AI as users, consumers and designers so they can influence outcomes. No more Apps with women’s names and voices!  Women bring unique perspectives that can make AI more fair, effective, and gender balanced.

Lack of confidence

Psychologists suggest that women lack the confidence to experiment with new technology or are afraid of being discredited because of any inaccuracies AI-generated content contains.

My own take – AI is a very helpful tool and as a relatively early experimenter I can see both the advantages and the flaws. I suggest playing around with it on topics you know something about. Personally, I would never use a platform like Chat GPT uncritically for something I knew little about. But for giving structure and outlining main points, AI can be an invaluable asset if used judiciously.

The future of work

Learning about AI also gives women the skills needed for future jobs. It’s a way to stay relevant and competitive in the job market. And of course, it is imperative to be up to date if you are involved in a job search  – especially if you are a more “experienced” candidate. Gendered ageism is very real and women job seekers need to do everything they can to deal with it and overcome those biases. It’s important not to fall behind male candidates.

I have seen some recruiters openly saying that they look for and give priority to candidates with knowledge of AI.

This is born out by research data. The LinkedIn Microsoft 2024 Work Trend Index Annual Report surveyed 31,000 people across 31 countries, examining hiring trends with researc carried out in Fortune 500 companies. They found that:

  • More than half (56%) of the managers suggest they would choose a candidate with relevant experience and some AI skills, over candidates who didn’t. They find AI knowledge more useful than additional experience.
  • 66% of Leaders would not hire someone without AI skills

Leading the way

AI can help solve many of the problems women face today, from healthcare to safety. If women are not involved, they risk being unable to influence the options so that AI meets their specific needs.

When women are actively involved in the growth of AI they can make constructive input and become leaders and role models, inspiring more girls and women to enter tech fields. They can also make sure male coders don’t embed gender bias even further.

Adopting AI is not just about keeping up to date. It’s about being in a stronger position to lead the way to a better, more equal future. Women need to be front and centre of this tech transition.
