LinkedIn Algorithmic Bias Report

£0.00

Does LinkedIn's algorithm treat women differently? This was a question posed last year shortly before a series of experiements started on the platform to try and establish if gender bias was embedded in the system

The reality is, it’s not just about what the algorithm is doing, but asking questions around what the Human-in-the-Loop is not doing.

And even if there is anyone at all, human or otherwise, auditing for equity?

Description

Does LinkedIn’s algorithm see women differently?

Over the past year, a striking pattern has surfaced on LinkedIn with a series of gender-based experiments. Women who temporarily switched their profiles to present as men reported dramatic jumps in reach,  in some cases tenfold. Switch back, and the numbers collapsed again.  Another experiment saw men and women posting in pairs, the same content at exactly the same time and monitoring the reach. There were signifcant gaps in favour of the guys.

The story of possible gender bias on LinkedIn was widely picked up by the main stream media but rarely examined in any depth. Our new report goes further: it traces the experiments in detail, separates the well-designed tests from the noisy ones, examines what happens at the intersection of gender and race, and looks at what happens in other languages.

We ask why there seems to be a visibility gap on a platform built on professional opportunity and if those opportunities are equal.

The original question was “Is LinkedIn gender biased?”  and the result is more complex and nuanced than you might imagine. One thing was clear,  we need to start asking different and probably better questions, to get better insights. The reality is it’s not just about what the algorithm is doing but what the Human-in-the-Loop is not. Or if there even is someone auditing for equity?

The report also looks at how these platforms  are impacted by E.U. law, and why regulation may turn out to be a blessing in disguise.
