How to Mitigate Bias in the Recruitment Process

Mitigating Bias in the Recruitment Process

Recruitment is where the diversity and quality of your organisation’s talent are determined. It is also where unconscious bias has its greatest impact,  shaping who applies, who is screened in, who is interviewed effectively, and who is ultimately selected. Most of the time, no one in the process believes they are being biased. This bias in the recruitment training workshop makes the process itself more trustworthy than the intentions of the individuals in it.

How Bias Enters the Hiring Process

A systematic walk through the recruitment process, including the intake meeting with the hiring manager, job descriptions, sourcing strategies, CV screening, interview design, assessment, and decision-making, plus salary and contract negotiations. You will identify the specific points at which bias is most likely to enter and compound. Participants often find that what they believed were objective decisions were shaped significantly by unchecked bias.

Writing Bias-Conscious Inclusive Job Descriptions

Language in job postings is not neutral. Research shows that specific words and phrases systematically deter qualified candidates from applying. Participants learn how to audit existing job descriptions and write new ones that attract the widest qualified pool. Gaining an understanding of how to manage the intake interview with the hiring manager, where biases first reflect themselves.

Sourcing

Learning how to extend the reach of your jobs search beyond established and tested avenues that have been in place for years to lengthen your talent pipeline.

Structured Interviewing and Assessment

Unstructured interviews are one of the least reliable predictors of job performance, and one of the most bias-prone assessments available. This section introduces structured interview design, standardised scoring, and the evidence base for assessment methods that actually predict performance.

The Decision Meeting,  Where Bias Concentrates

Group decision-making is particularly vulnerable to bias amplification: conformity pressure, the anchoring effect, and affinity bias all converge in the post-interview discussion. Participants learn facilitation techniques for more objective, evidence-based hiring decisions.

Building a Bias-Conscious Recruitment Culture

Structural interventions that reduce the reliance on individual bias management: diverse panels, blind screening, standardised criteria, data tracking, and accountability mechanisms. These are not bureaucratic burdens, they are the difference between a hiring process that works and one that looks like it does.
